Behind the design
The Air VaporMax represents a new era in Nike innovation. "They have changed our Air design philosophy," says cushioning innovation
designer Zachary Elder. With the VaporMax, the designers wanted to capture the feeling of "running over the air", so they began by restructuring
the Air unit so that they could attach it directly to the top. "It was a challenge, but it was worth it," says Tom Minami, senior shoe designer.
"Without a midsole or insole, you can feel the Air unit in a whole new way. On pre-rior models of Air Max, the goal was to fill the sole with as
much Air as possible, but on Va-porMax we focused on using the Air unit efficiently. "On footfalls, each section pushes the Air unit, increasing
the pressure," explains Elder. "When you-shoot the foot off the ground, the pressure is released and a cushioned rebound is created. The adventure
from the time the shoes were conceived to their launch has lasted seven years, and Elder and Minami are excited about all that remains to come.
"I am very proud of the product," says Elder. "This new approach is going to be a big turning point for Air and Nike.
