Behind the design
Air VaporMax represents a new era in Nikes innovation. "They have changed our Air design philosophy," says damping innovation designer Zachary Elder. With the VaporMax, designers wanted to capture the sensation of "running on air", so they started by restructuring the Air unit so that they could fix it directly to the top. "It was a challenge, but it was worth it," says Tom Minami, senior shoe designer. "Without a midsole or insole, you can feel the Air unit in a whole new way." In previous Air Max models, the goal was to fill the sole with all possible Air, but in the VaporMax we focused on using the Air unit efficiently. "In the footsteps, each section pushes the Air unit, thus increasing the pressure," explains Elder. "When you lift your foot off the ground, the pressure is released and a damped rebound is created." The adventure from when the shoes were devised until their launch has lasted seven years, and Elder and Minami are excited about all that remains to come. "I am very proud of the product," says Elder. "This new approach is going to be a great turning point for the Air and Nike."
